Challenge

The project involved casting two bases with 6m reinforced SFA piles and heavily reinforced pile caps containing in excess of 100T of concrete each. The foundations were designed to be substantial enough to withstand the loads imposed on the 44m cantilevered floodlights.

Given the size of the excavations and heavy plant / machinery needed, operations had to be carefully planned with Leeds FC facilities management to ensure there was full segregation between the public, staff and workforce as well as ensuring that the works were carefully scheduled to not coincide with home fixtures.

The works had to be carried out during the winter months which increased the significant issues with ground water and rain water run-off, the excavations therefore requiring constant pumping. Works had to had to be completed in order that Leeds FC, who had just been promoted to the premier league, could host their scheduled home premiership game as planned.

Solution

Due to shortened contract period we chose to use a new concrete product, which we have much experience of using, which dramatically increased the required characteristic strength within 7 days rather than standard 28, thereby reducing the curing period and contract duration by three weeks.

Client Benefits

Sterling provided the most cost-effective solution to the client, having secured the works following a competitive tendering process and provided a solution to the concrete curing times, by recommending an alternative proven and tested product.
