Social Value

As a responsible business working across Liverpool City Region and the UK, we know how important it is to take actions that benefit the environment and society.

Having a positive impact in the communities where we live, and work is really important to us as is reducing our impact on the planet. We’re assessing our environmental impact to reduce carbon emissions and looking at ways to increase the social value we deliver on projects. We want to meet the highest levels of environmental, social and governance across everything we do.

  • We’re keen to get to Net Zero Carbon by 2030 without the need for carbon offset. And we’re working with Liverpool John Moores University to study our current impact and create a plan for how we can achieve this goal.

  • We’ve been working across the region and the UK for over 25 years and from our head office in Knowsley Business Park we employ almost 70 staff. We’re proud to be a Living Wage Employer, paying wages that meet everyday needs. Apprentices are a vital part of #TeamSterling making up 10 per cent of our workforce. Offering local employment opportunities is something we’re really passionate about as is continuous learning and development, nurturing and upskilling our people into senior posts or new roles.

Despite the low numbers of women working within our industry, we’re proud that three of our five senior managers are women. And we know our success is due to our talented team, most of them have been with us many years. That’s why we focus on their health and wellbeing and regularly run site level wellbeing campaigns on topics including skin cancer and mental health.

  • We have a strong, reliable supply chain with approximately 87% of our suppliers based in the region, the majority of which we’ve worked with for decades. We like to build strong partnerships and part of this is offering prompt and fair payment. We’re proud to be accredited with the government’s Prompt Payment Code. By employing local business and people at every opportunity we maximise local spend boosting regional economies while minimising travel and reducing our carbon footprint for people and materials. We know this makes sense and it matters to us that we get this right.

  • We pride ourselves in having long-standing relationships with local schools, colleges and training providers across the region. Our MD Paul, and many of our team grew up in and live in, some of the region’s most disadvantaged areas so we know the importance of raising aspirations and creating opportunities for young people. Paul and other members of the team regularly deliver career talks across Merseyside.

We try to make a real difference across the communities we serve by helping with local projects and through sponsorships. We currently sponsor the kit for South Liverpool FC’s youth team for 16 to 18-year-olds. Pre-pandemic we supported two vulnerable looked after care leavers by decorating and carpeting their new homes free of charge. We also donated 11 computers to older people in Knowsley through a local club to tackle social and digital exclusion.

We’re in the process of establishing a governance structure for a new music hub/academy in partnership with Adlib Audio. This new community facility will offer a practice and performance space for young musicians but will also train and offer industry skills in the hope of creating a future supply chain of audio, lighting, video and creative technicians and producers.

#TeamSterling regularly volunteer, and we encourage them to become trustees and governors of local organisations and schools.

Our MD, Paul, is a passionate and very proactive supporter for Liverpool’s KnifeSavers charity and we plan to support and help raise its profile through team fundraising and volunteering activities.
