Alun Davies has recently turned 64 and to paraphrase the Beatles song referencing his age – Sterling definitely still needs him - more than ever.

For Alun, foreman ground worker in our maintenance division, is one of our longest serving employees with his association with Sterling spanning 26 years.

We know we’re on solid ground with The City & Guilds trained stone mason who initially worked as an advisor on underground, roadworks and drainage works projects.

He has worked here in a full-time role for more than two decades and is now helping the next generation of #TeamSterling come through the ranks.

Simply put, a foreman ground worker is a construction professional who prepares the ground before, during and after building work - ensuring sub-surfaces are ready for the structural work to begin.

Asked why he has dedicated a large part of his career to Sterling, Alun, from Huyton said: “I like the job, it’s a friendly company – you have to be happy in what you do and I am. I’m lucky to work with a great bunch of people and there is so much variety in this job.”

Alun said it’s great to see apprentices coming through and being given the chance to thrive and access relevant training on the way up the ladder.

And encouraging others to join #TeamSterling he added: “It’s great seeing people come here with that willingness to learn and put so much work in.

“Construction is a very interesting career, you never have two jobs alike and I think young people should consider apprenticeships and get off their computers and give it a go!”

A lot of Alun’s spare time revolves around family. He is a father of eight and has 29 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He also loves fishing and going for “a rare pint”.
