The scheme comprised a full refurbishment of a live, occupied and fully operational clinical health centre in Preston including decarbonisation improvements. The project represents a comprehensive initiative to modernise and future-proof this vital community healthcare facility. Ingol Health Centre serves the local population with a range of essential medical services, including general practice (GP), chiropody, physiotherapy, speech therapy, pediatric audiology, phlebotomy, and immunisation clinics. The project aimed to not only upgrade the building’s interiors and exterior but also align it with the NHS’s overarching decarbonisation strategy to reduce carbon emissions across its estate.
To achieve significant carbon reductions, a multi-faceted approach was adopted. Improvements to the building’s thermal efficiency were prioritised through the following measures:
Additionally, the heating and energy systems were overhauled to eliminate reliance on gas and adopt renewable energy sources:
Beyond decarbonisation, a full interior refurbishment was carried out to enhance functionality and patient experience. The works included reconfiguring offices and clinical spaces to meet modern healthcare standards, alongside a host of structural and cosmetic improvements:
During the works the building had to remain a fully functional live environment for both the GP practice and the Clinical services.
We developed a dynamic phasing and logistics plan along with the Architect and NHS and worked carefully with the practice managers and staff to adjust the plan and sequencing to ensure the full functionality of the services and the safety of the staff, patients and visitors at all times.
We managed the decanting of existing rooms and the relocation of staff and clinicians into the newly refurbished rooms, the works involved out-of-hours working evenings and weekends to ensure that the day-to-day running of the clinics were not disrupted.
