project overview
The project at Birmingham Airport involved resurfacing and structural reinforcement works to accommodate the weight and operational demands of HGVs. This included the excavation and removal of existing subbases and sub-materials, followed by the installation of a new subbase using Type 1 MOT stone at a depth of 300mm. A multi-layer tarmacadam system was then applied, a binder course laid, and a surface course laid. These upgrades ensured a robust and durable surface, meeting the high-performance requirements of the airport’s infrastructure.

The Challenges & Changes

The project faced several challenges that required careful planning and adaptation. Traffic management was a critical aspect, as bays had to be relocated and closed off to ensure safety and smooth workflow. Additionally, there was an unknown specification of the existing construction, which necessitated on-site problem-solving and flexibility in the approach. Effective communication proved vital, particularly between the gatehouse, responsible for deliveries and security coordination, and the Sterling operatives on-site. By fostering clear and consistent communication, these challenges were successfully managed, enabling the project to progress efficiently.
